GUS SCHRADER'S wrecked Riverside Special after his fatal crash at the Louisiana State Fair Speedway in Shreveport, La. SCHRADER was thrown from the racer and his helmet and shoes came off while he was clearing a 15 foot fence. He died from a head trauma about two hours after this wreck on Oct. 22, 1941.Ironically, this was to be his retirement race.

About 1951 at the LOUISIANA STATE FAIR SPEEDWAY in Shreveport, La. This half mile track was the secne of classic IMCA stock car,big car and midget duels but this is early stock cars on the track. J.W. Gentry in # 79 is on the pole. # 20 behind him is probably Brussel Rains in the Leonard Anderson entry, # 53 on the outside is E.T."Preacher" Durr. Also in the field is IMCA veteran Snuffy Smith. (Ernie Roberson collection)

Get ready for Jalopies! While they were known by different names post WWII America loved seeing race cars. Obviously a dirt track pit scene as evidenced by the shaker screen and its a CONVERTIBLE with the rag top in place! Probably means it was his dating car last night at the local Dairy Dream. BERT McNEESE in #5 climbs into the cockpit of another midget racer at Lakewood Speedway in Denver, Colorado. No rollbars, no firesuits, suspect crash helmets, few seat belts- racing was exceptionally dangerous in those days.

Old homebuilt race cars were common when "big car" racing was at its zenith. This #9 race car had suffered some front right wheel problems and is pictured in front of a garage. Unkown as to driver or location. (Ernie Roberson Collection)

From the early 1950's Louisiana State Fair Speedway Friday night midget races. An injured unidentified driver is removed from his car. The midgets did not run the full half mile track but a path through the infield and the frontstretch. These midgets also raced in the Texas and Arkanas area circuits which may aid with identifying the driver. It was an independent promotion involving some drivers from the Houston and Dallas area possibly promoted by Red Dowdy. Note the the uniform to the left with JIMMIE LYNCH DEATH DODGERS printed on the rear. (Ernie Roberson Collection)
